Updated: Apr 8

Anthony, New Mexico –Gabriel I. Holguin has announced his candidacy for Anthony, New Mexico Mayor as of April 4, 2025.

He is vying for a seat currently occupied by Diana Murillo who has not announced whether she'll be seeking reelection. Holguin stated that he is prepared for a challenge in November.

As current Mayor Pro Tempore for the City of Anthony, Board member for South Central Council of Governments and as a Paralegal for a law firm that encompasses injured clients and those whose civil rights have been affected; Holguin has seen firsthand the needs of many in Anthony.

Holguin is a lifelong resident of Anthony, New Mexico and Class of 2018 Graduate of Alma d' Arte Charter High School; later becoming a School Board member of Alma in 2022. Additionally, Holguin holds an Associate's Degree from New Mexico State University in Education. Holguin was elected to the City Council in 2021 leading in a four way race, and appointed as Mayor Pro Tempore in 2024.

"Anthony currently lacks a government where community members are invited to the decision making process. I am running to restore a transparent government while inviting community members to a seat at the executive table" says Gabriel I. Holguin.

A lawsuit was filed against Gabriel I. Holguin in 2023 by incumbent Mayor Murillo geared to remove him from office for alleged misconduct in office. In 2024, the lawsuit was dropped with prejudice.
