Keep Martin Lerma as Your Kid’s Coach and Volunteer Fireman

Former Mayor of Anthony TX, Martin Lerma, is running for a third term as mayor of the Town of Anthony. He was mayor from 2015-2019 but did not serve his full term because he resigned during his second term, months before his second term expired in January 2019. Several rumors of misuse of our town’s funds and allegations of closed door meeting deals for his resign abound. Mr. Lerma stated he was resigning because he had shoulder surgery in May and was going to have the other shoulder worked on, but this didn’t seem to affect him being a fireman or a fireman volunteer so he had to resign.

While Martin Lerma was mayor the town was in shambles unable to keep town clerks who also performed as heads of the bookkeeping department. In an “Open Letter to the Citizens of Anthony, TX!”, Shawn Weeks wrote to the Rio Grande Gazette, complaining, to Editor Adrian Baca, by asking him a few questions. In Question #5 he asked, “Where was your concern when then Mayor Martin Lerma had four different Town Clerks during his four years in office?” Mr. Baca answered by telling Mr. Weeks that the Gazette was not in business for the entire duration of Mr. Lerma’s term. The Gazette started joining the online meetings and noted the council could not arrive at a balanced budget during a meeting in 2017. They were talking about laying-off town personnel. Mr. Weeks was concerned that they were dipping into the water and sewer fund, something which has had grave consequences to this day. He questioned the police departments 19 police officers and the council constantly disregarding the budget. The council had approved Mr. Lerma’s pet projects prompting Mr. Weeks to express concern that they were getting the town more and more in debt. During Mr. Lerma’s term the Fiscal Years 2016, 2017, and 2018 had not been completed by October 2018 making it difficult for future audits to be processed.

Mr. Lerma may now have the desire to keep the town within its budget but he lacks the experience, even though he had the title of mayor for four years. He lacks the education, since his resume consists of classes dealing with fire-fighting and not how to properly plan for the rapid growth the town is experiencing. Probably the worse deficiency is his weak ethical will to put the town first and not his group of friends, who go in and out of our town’s government positions, incurring favors for each other and protecting each other’s misdeeds.

Re-elect Anthony Turner; an ethical, experienced, educated, all around well prepared individual as mayor of Anthony TX who knows how to plan for today’s ongoing and future growth. One who knows how to monitor a town’s funds, income, expenditures, and can deal with municipal planning professionals on a level field.

Keep Martin Lerma, whose previous mayoral term record proves he doesn’t know how to effectively govern, plan, or prosper a town. Keep Martin Lerma as your friend, fireman and kid’s coach.
